One member is not updating, everyone else is fine

When it is one person rather than the whole nest, the problem is almost always a setting on their phone — not your app, and not the nest.

The fixes go on the phone that is not updating. If you cannot see your son’s location, these change on his phone, not yours.

The fast way

Open that member in the app and tap Ask to fix. They receive a notification that opens a screen telling them precisely what is misconfigured on their device and takes them to the right settings page. It reads the real state of their phone, so it beats guessing.

Their avatar also carries a badge that says what kind of problem it is: red for sharing that is broken outright, orange for degraded — and how long it has been that way, which also explains any matching gap in their history.

The three things it usually is

  1. Location permission is not set to Always. On iPhone that is Settings → Family Nest → Location → Always; on Android, Allow all the time. Anything less stops updates as soon as the app is not on screen.
  2. The phone is saving battery. Low Power Mode on iPhone, or battery optimisation on Android, throttles background work — updates still arrive, just late and further apart.
  3. The app was force-quit, or on Android was never excluded from the manufacturer’s battery manager. See location update fixes for the per-manufacturer settings.

On iPhone there is a fourth, and it surprises everyone: notifications must stay allowed, because the app is woken by a silent push to report its position while closed. Turning notifications off stops location updating too. Leave the permission on and switch off sounds and banners instead.

Still stale after all that

Check they are on the current version of the app, and that they are not behind a VPN that cannot reach the app’s servers.

Removing and re-inviting the member is worth trying last, not first — it throws away their place in the nest and almost never fixes a permission problem.

If it persists, email support@familynestapp.com with your nest code and the member’s name.
